Zantac: What is it? What is it used for?

Zantac is an over-the-counter and prescription drug in the United States. It is the trade name for ranitidine, used to reduce acid production in the stomach.

NDMA

N-Nitrosodimethylamine is an organic chemical recognized in the 1970s to be carcinogenic to humans. It is a derivative of dimethylhydrazine (a very toxic component of rocket fuel), which, if consumed at high levels, can cause cancer.²

Why Are Zantac Lawsuits Happening?

The lawsuits against Zantac began after the FDA requested that the product be removed from all retail counters and for those who were taking it to stop and dispose of the drug.

Zantac was withdrawn from circulation because it was likely to increase NDMA to levels that could harm health and cause cancer.

That is why those people who were allegedly affected after the consumption of ranitidine with a cancer-causing chemical decided to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers for damages.

Is Zantac carcinogenic?

According to FDA studies, Zantac contains ranitidine with NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) impurities, which may be hazardous to consumer health.

Low levels of this toxic chemical should not lead to an increased risk of cancer. However, higher and sustained consumption of this component could be a trigger for the disease.

The agency determined that NDMA levels in Zantac increase with time and above room temperature, even under normal conditions of product storage, distribution, or handling by consumers.

That is, climatic and temperature conditions can increase the level of NDMA in Zantac above the daily intake limit, which could be a cause of cancer development.

Do I Qualify For The Zantac Lawsuit?

To qualify for the Zantac lawsuit, you must first be able to prove that you have been a regular user of the drug and, post-use, have been diagnosed with Zantac-related cancer. Finally, you must show a connection between the consumption of Zantac and the diagnosis of the disease.

How Much Is The Zantac Settlement Payout?

There is no payment agreement currently since the trials are about to start next year (in California in February 2023 and Florida in July 2023).
