Zantac Lawsuit

We are no longer taking Zantac cases until further notice. U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenberg in December 2022 dismissed the MDL case being heard in Florida.

Zantac Lawsuit Update

In April 2020, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) requested manufacturers to remove from the market all medicines containing ranitidine contaminated with NDMA (better known as Zantac), as it is a probable human carcinogen¹.

If you took this drug and later developed some form of cancer, you may be able to join the Zantac class action lawsuit and get possible financial compensation.

In this note from Legal Help Advisor, we tell you what the Zantac class action lawsuit is all about and, if you qualify as a potentially injured party, what you need to do to participate.

Zantac: What is it? What is it used for?

Zantac is an over-the-counter and prescription drug in the United States. It is the trade name for ranitidine, used to reduce acid production in the stomach.

This medicine has been used to treat heartburn, ulcers in the stomach and intestines, gastroesophageal reflux, abdominal pain, sore throat, and any pathology caused by the presence of large amounts of acid in the stomach.

Currently, the Zantac made with ranitidine contaminated with NDMA is no longer manufactured, but the Zantac 360 formula made with famotidine is in force.

NDMA

N-Nitrosodimethylamine is an organic chemical recognized in the 1970s to be carcinogenic to humans. It is a derivative of dimethylhydrazine (a very toxic component of rocket fuel), which, if consumed at high levels, can cause cancer.²

Why Are Zantac Lawsuits Happening?

The lawsuits against Zantac began after the FDA requested that the product be removed from all retail counters and for those who were taking it to stop and dispose of the drug.

Zantac was withdrawn from circulation because it was likely to increase NDMA to levels that could harm health and cause cancer.

That is why those people who were allegedly affected after the consumption of ranitidine with a cancer-causing chemical decided to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers for damages.

Is Zantac carcinogenic?

According to FDA studies, Zantac contains ranitidine with NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) impurities, which may be hazardous to consumer health.

Low levels of this toxic chemical should not lead to an increased risk of cancer. However, higher and sustained consumption of this component could be a trigger for the disease.

The agency determined that NDMA levels in Zantac increase with time and above room temperature, even under normal conditions of product storage, distribution, or handling by consumers.

That is, climatic and temperature conditions can increase the level of NDMA in Zantac above the daily intake limit, which could be a cause of cancer development.

Do I Qualify For The Zantac Lawsuit?

To qualify for the Zantac lawsuit, you must first be able to prove that you have been a regular user of the drug and, post-use, have been diagnosed with Zantac-related cancer. Finally, you must show a connection between the consumption of Zantac and the diagnosis of the disease.

To carry out the claim, you must contact a lawyer in charge of collecting all the evidence and information relevant to the case.

That is why, if you meet these requirements, do not hesitate to contact us so that a lawyer can advise you in the best way by entering here.

Why join a Zantac class action Lawsuit?

The reasons for joining the Zantac class action lawsuit are mainly that the drugmaker failed to report cancer risks on its label and that the drug’s design is flawed, as ranitidine is an unstable molecule that affects health.

So, if you took Zantac and developed cancer, in addition to having health problems, you will also have to face medical expenses and a lack of activity.

Therefore, the class action lawsuit presents an opportunity to obtain possible financial compensation to help you face the inconvenience that having this disease can cause you.

When Will The Zantac Lawsuit Be Settled?

There is no settlement date for the Zantac lawsuit. However, the judges of Florida and California have already set the dates for the first trials.

In the Superior Court of Alameda, California, Judge Evelio Grillo set the start date for February 2023.

For its part, the multidistrict litigation of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida will be in charge of Judge Robin L. Rosenberg and the first bellwether trial is scheduled for July 2023.

The litigation consolidates thousands of lawsuits from people affected by the use of ranitidine with NMDA.

How Much Is The Zantac Settlement Payout?

There is no payment agreement currently since the trials are about to start next year (in California in February 2023 and Florida in July 2023).

However, no compensation can be guaranteed, since it depends on the evidence and the judge’s decision.

How Do I Qualify for a Zantac Lawsuit?

According to Zantac lawyers, people must satisfy three conditions to potentially qualify for a lawsuit — proven Zantac use, a cancer diagnosis and a connection between the diagnosis and Zantac.

Only a lawyer can properly evaluate a claim, and they can help gather medical records and evidence to build a case.
